Curious about the origins of this quirky celebration? The Emma Crawford Coffin Races began as a Manitou Springs tradition in 1995, honoring Emma Crawford, who was buried atop Red Mountain in 1891. After years of harsh weather, her coffin famously slid down the mountain in 1929, inspiring the annual races that now celebrate her story in Manitou Springs.
